When the Los Angeles Public Library floated the idea of demolishing Central Library in 1978, fans of historic architecture came together to form the Los Angeles Conservancy. Three years later the organization, which has grown to become the largest local preservation group in America, held their first awards ceremony to honor restoration projects. This year’s class of winners includes the city of Los Angeles LGBT history statement and eight historic buildings including a Moorish library, a railroad hospital, and homes by pioneering modernists Richard Neutra and RM Schindler. The awards will be presented at the Biltmore Hotel on May 5.
